About the drive shaft

Characteristic for all of our Brikbikes is the use of a drive shaft. We believe in this system because it has proven to have a lot of advantages compared to a chained bike. The shaft-drive is reliable, strong and maintenance is not necessary. The drive shaft has proven his strength and reliability during years in the army.

Advantages of a shaft-driven bike

  • Low on maintenance because is a closed system
  • No broken chains anymore
  • No external moving parts
  • Changing your rear wheel was never so easy
  • No noise, no cracking sounds

How does it work?

Next to the treadle on the right you’ll find two gears, placed perpendicular so the gear an axle. On the end of that axle, near the rear-wheel you find another set of perpendicular gears who bring the power tot the hub. The hub will empower the wheel to turn.

A drive shaft need only a little care. The reason why is because it is a closed system filled with special oil to lubricate the inner parts. Because you need to be able to take the rear wheel out, the back part of the prop shaft is partly open. So sometimes it will be necessary to clean the gears and lubricate this part. That’s it!

History of the shaft driven bikes

These kind of bikes were first built at the end of the 19th century. They were at that time very popular because of the wide clothing the people wore. The cloths could’t get stuck between the chain. Thereby at that time the quality of chains wasn’t that great. The most popular time for this system was in the early years of the 20th century. Back then the most popular dutch brand of shaft driven bicycles was a company called Burgers from Deventer.

The chain driven bicycles became more popular and it’s quality became better. it was cheaper to produce so it was a big opponent for the drive shafts. Only the army used it at that time because they needed systems that were reliable, maintenance friendly en durable.

More than 50 years, the drive shaft bicycles were gone from the streets. A reason for this was that is was not possible to combine it with gears. But at the end of the ’80’s new techniques for smooth transmissions in the drive shafts made it being reborn.

The fact that you can use gears together with the drive shaft made it even a stronger comeback.

Because we believe in this strong and clean system we give you standard 3 years of warranty on the shaft.
